Every nurse practitioner will face challenges in the course of his or her career. Knowing what these work challenges will be will allow you to prepare yourself for them or at least to not be caught off guard when they do enter into your experience. Here are the potential obstacles that you will come face to face with sooner or later.

Lack Of Prescriptive Abilities

Your lack of prescriptive abilities as a nurse practitioner will be a challenge that you will face on a regular basis. Effective and efficient health care is the goal of many a medical professional but sometimes the boundaries of a certain job can get in the way. For nurse practitioners, one of these limitations is their lack of prescriptive abilities. If you could prescribe medications then the treatment of patients could be much faster and easier. However, unless you can become a nurse practitioner with prescriptive abilities then you will face the challenge of providing excellent care with this obstacle.

Insufficient Reimbursement And A Lesser Status

Going along with the previous challenge is that nurse practitioners are often not fully reimbursed by insurance companies as primary care providers even though nurse practitioners can often provide the same services. In instances where there are not enough primary care providers to meet the demand then having nurse practitioners take on this role is common sense but this is often not recognized by insurance companies. The real challenge that this situation illustrates is that nurse practitioners are not recognized as having the same status as other medical professionals and that can interfere with the care you provide.

Ill-Defined Roles

Continuing along the same lines, the roles and duties or nurse practitioners are not always well-defined. You may face the challenge of figuring out the extent of your duties and your limitations. In some settings your ability to operate autonomously may be seriously hampered while in others you may have to operate rather independently to do your job well. You may just have to figure out your own job description as you go along.

Working With Other Medical Professionals

Working with other medical professionals effectively is a big part of being a nurse practitioner. However, will often ill-defined job parameters and some medical professionals who do not see you as being on the same level as those with other job titles, working with other medical professionals can be a challenge in itself. Learning to work as an effective part of a medical team is always a challenge for nurse practitioners.

Changing Training Programs

Changing training programs are another challenge you will face. The emphasis of some nurse practitioner training programs is different from that of others so your skills may not match up exactly with what your employer expects. You will have to make sure that you possess or acquire all the necessary skills to perform your job.

These are 5 work challenges that every nurse practitioner will face. Knowing about them will not prevent them but you can have a plan ready to help you deal with them. Or at least you can take comfort knowing that every nurse practitioner is facing the same challenges.
